In 1926 W D Vizard published a book of his own poems entitled “In The Valley of the Gods”, written about places all around this area. He included a poem entitled ‘Round About Wainlodes’ from which the following extract sub-titled ‘Familiar Scenes II’ is taken.

And see; the place seems much the same
As in my boyhood’s day;
The beached boats, the river broad,
The inn besides the way;
The red wall’d hill whose rounded top
Looks on the stream sheer down,
The meadows flat, the browsing kine,
The bargemen berry brown,
The barges trailing round the bend,
The pleasure boats from town,
The crowd of smiling eyes aboard,
And ne’er a face to frown :-

The pic-nic party by the hedge,
The car going up the hill,
The houseboat anchor’d by the bank,
The willows drooping, still,
The anglers to their favourite spots
Going up the stream or down,
The bathers bathing in the depths,
Where each one acts the clown
At playing games of make-believe
That one is going to drown :-

The happy idlers on the banks,
The row-boats gliding by;
And all beneath the cloudless blue
Of summer’s laughing sky:
In sooth it is a lovely scene,
As ever scene can be;
What lovelier picture painter’s eye,
Fond-fain could ever see ?
O, who with cunning skillful hand
Can paint, dear God, like Thee ?

And such delights, dear June, hast thou !
O, for thy cup of pleasure now,
Quite bubbling full, and brimming o’er
With crimson wine all sparkling, glowing,
Or milk-and-honey downward flowing !
O, handsel of glad days in store !
The golden goblet with the Graces
Let me sip in shady places,
Till I see th’ harmonious Nine
Pour me out delirious wine !

OK Marcus. Can't say I've read it cover to cover but I do pick it up for 5mins every now and then.

Well done SRU.

The Big Man's plight puts a bit of perspective (from both sides POV) on professional players trying to earn as much as they can in a short period whilst playing + loyalty to clubs/family/friends.

Is this the right place to post a rugby question? If, at a ruck, a player whose side takes the ball into the ruck and works it back, stretches his arm back with the ball under his hand to recycle, is that ball then in play? (Watching NZ rugby)

Technically the ball is still in the tuck I think. I don’t believe that rule has changed

I do like the way the refs, and Angus Gardner in particular, are strictly managing the breakdown and offside lines. 2 huge bugbears for all of us
