Mike Cleary in The Telegraph has done a good article on JP since his redundancy.

Who would you had preferred JP or the new ref we had today?

JP x 1000 and that’s saying something, as I was never a fan at all.

Give the guy a break. It was his 1st game at top level. He wasn’t that bad.

He was awful but as Westy said in the match thread they’ve got to start somewhere. Is the gulf in quality between the top tier and the rest that big?

Every ref gets decisions wrong - they are human! As long as learns from them and adapts then he will be fine.

What annoyed me the most was that he keep standing in passing lanes!

I thought he had a poor first half, definitely improved in the second half. Shame we didn’t improve at managing him at the same rate.

As said earlier, he has to learn somewhere and this game didn’t have too much on it realistically.

Also he was part of a team containing much more experienced officials, if a finger of blame needs to be pointed, perhaps they should take the main brunt???

I thought the ref was ok. For a first game - pretty good.

I like JP when I'm neutral and want to be entertained - but that really was just because he ignored a lot of infringements.

Of course the RFU board hasn’t slimmed itself down in any shape or form. If it had it could have protected the part of its org that makes the game possible.
