The Caterpillar Ruck

Whichever coach first came up with the idea of the Caterpillar ruck deserves a lifetime ban from the sport.

It's tolerable if it is formed quickly and the ball kicked straight way but there were points tonight were the "great" Karl Dickson called "use it" and players still joined the conga line hanging of the back of the ruck afterwards and nothing is done about it.

Great minds find opportunities - see Les Kiss and the choke tackle - but this facet of the game needs the Law-makers attention ASAP. Issue is it's within the Laws and isn't dangerous. Finding a valid reasoning outside it looking/being daft is going to be the key.

It would help if the "use it" call actually meant "use it" not take your sweet bloody time about it.

Surely if the ref says use it and the 9 doesn't he should be penalised, no law change necessary. Currently this doesn't happen.

The Law states 5 secs after the use it call. If Ref's pinged it properly, then the Caterpillar would disappear.

I make it a habit to start a 5 count ( starting from 0) when i hear the ref call it. 99% of the time the players use it on or before the 5. Same was true tonight.

If you want change it needs to be reduced to 3 seconds.

Absolutely agree. The law is there to stop this already, just enforce it.

And for our part, can we communicate our displeasure by referring to it as "The Human Centipede"?

Think the laws need amending and think they actually will be to remove this awful spectacle that wastes time and doesn’t make good viewing. Not in keeping with the governing bodies trying to make the game more up tempo and good to watch for newbies to rugby

Every time Varney used this he merely gave away possession, the kick was poor, the chase ineffective.
A truly shocking inept performance.

Most of Varneys kicks were contestable but I think we lost every contest. The cliche is that a kick is only as good as it's chase and to be blunt the Quins players, and back 3 especially, were better under the high ball than our players were.
