OTT Stack Stevens

For rugby fans of a certain age, Cornish legend Stack Stevens has passed away. A contemporary of Mike Burton's and try scorer v NZ in 1973

Nothing in a google search result to say he has passed away. Maybe the news is not out yet.

It is true then - very sad. He was a great character and one of the few British rugby players christened Claude.

Back in the 70s I reffed Penzance v Penryn, a proper local derby.
I went on to the Penzance dressing room to inspect the studs etc. The captain said, 'We're waiting for our prop, ref.'
In walked Stack carrying a Tesco bag from which he took the worst pair of boots I've ever seen. They were falling apart and had about four studs between them. They were boots you dare not clean.
' I had a job finding these,' he said.'Thats why I'm so late.'
He played as you would expect, like a man who'd seen it all. Which he had.
RIP Stack

A self-made top quality player. He rose to the top without easy access to the facilities or exposure of the leading "amateur" clubs of the day. He got round this by making a 560 mile round trip from the family farm to play for Harlequins at the peak of his career.
