I don’t think you’re going to get minnows in the Champions Cup Spanish Exile..!

To be the best, you have to beat the best!

So why would you want to to play weakened sides in the group stages, to then face a mammoth task in a quarter final against a big outfit? Surely youd want good competition in the group stage to prep the team for such a big task?

I suppose it comes down to the fact that with Gloucester being unlikely to win the competition outright in the next couple of years what would be the best from the fans point of view. Personally would like to see the best players turning out at Kingsholm so teams such as Leinster with Sexton and Furlong or Toulose with the likes of Kolbe, Medard and Dupont would be preferable to last year where we hosted a Castres side with no real players of note in it.

Lyon ... great trips to Bourgoin Jailleu in the past ...

Clermont ... looks like a great stade, great supporters ...

Munster ... 'cos I can get a bed for the night at one of my cousins'

This is very work is progress due to the French positions not confirmed (I've used league position for now) but we can probably narrow down who we will play already:

Tier 1: Saracens, Leinster, Toulouse, Exeter, Glasgow, Clermont Auvergne
Tier 2: Gloucester, Munster, Lyon, 1 from tier 1, 1 from tier 3
Tier 3: Harlequins, Connacht, La Rochelle, Northampton, Ulster, Racing 92
Tier 4: Sale, Ospreys, Bath, Benetton, Montpellier

I make it that Gloucester could play up to 11 of these (depending on which teams are drawn into tier 2 with us on the day)
Tier 1: Leinster, Toulouse, Glasgow, Clermont Auvergne
Tier 3: Connacht, La Rochelle, Ulster, Racing 92
Tier 4: Sale, Ospreys, Bath, Benetton, Montpellier
Clubs who cannot move tiers are in bold

Leinster, Racing and Benneton would be an appealing group.

If I had to pick from those possibles I'd go for a group of: Clermont, Gloucester, Racing, Bath. The opportunity to beat Bath 4 times in one season is too much to pass up for me!

I know this just a wishlist, but as I recall there are some restrictions on certain tiers having teams from the same countries drawn. If that is correct then it is unlikely to be 2 French and 2 English in a group.

You'll only get 1 group with 2 Eng teams as we have 7 qualifiers

I believe clashes are avoided until tier 4., so we couldn't get french teams from tier 1 and 3.

4 games against Bath would be good fun (as long as we don't lose!)
