I like the ref mic being (pretty much) open throughout the games. It does occasionally lead to the TV commentators having to apologise for "any bad language you may have heard", but that's always a risk during a live broadcast, and not just in sports.

Agree that some matches the audio feed does become more of a chat amongst friends, with the live game going on in the background being more of a distraction to them.

Can you imagine if there was ref mic in football? There would have to be a decent delay in broadcast during "live" games, and they'd wear a bleep machine out for every game. It can be quite fruity in F1 races too, with the driver's radio messages to their pits - although only when their race is going badly...

Mind you, if the footballers were then made to listen back to the ref mic feed after a game (and fined for every expletive muttered - say 1% of their weekly wage per word), maybe they might then start to moderate their on-pitch language, not to mention start to show the match officials rather more respect than many of them do currently - have you ever heard a footballer call the referee "sir" during a game???

You've never heard a swear word on a rugby pitch? In my opinion.... it's the attitude, intent and respect (or lack of) with which the profanity is used towards the player or official that is the difference.

Probably sacrilegious, but I think the Italian back row looks better balanced with Negri, Steyn & Polledri, but they're taking an absolute battering today whatever.

I think I saw that from a friend who's been over there that he's on South African TV doing the summarizer's job in the studio. All the same, he's not on our screens

What a stupid thing to do, first time Italy have broken through the SA defense, and a chance to get back in touching distance.
Should have red carded both of them, shades of the NZ incident on BoD

It’s even worse that there was no need, the whistle had already gone for a penalty
