Wayne Barnes is the best referee in the world. By a country mile.

Yep he probably is, but how was that not 2 red cards, or a red and a yellow ? Won't be surprised if the other prop is cited

I’m also unsure how the other man was not carded. Barnes came to the decision that Blue 1 was the worst offender of the two players, so gave him the red. However, they both pretty obviously picked Vermeulen up by a leg each and dropped him on his head. Barnes even said that Blue 17 started the action. It shouldn’t have had any impact on the decision, but would he have carded both players if it had happened later in the second half?

That aside, I thought he was outstanding. Even the way he communicates with the players and the other officials is brilliant.

No question he is the best in my mind. However, the language issue helps massively and the criticism of French refs, although well founded, is perhaps compounded by their inability to communicate at the breakdown.

I went to NZ for the RWC 2011, and on arrival in Blenheim dropped into a bar for refreshments with the big screen on for the evenings match. Imagine my elation at hearing a voice not unlike S.Barnes droning across the pub - I called the staff to mute the volume to which the Brits there had cheer. I travel halfway around the world and cannot get away from him....!

A difficult one, lifting a leg is a penalty (Blue 17), tipping a player is a potential yellow card (maybe 1 & 17), ramming his head into the floor is a red card (Blue 1), the combined tip is very hard to judge. In fairness the red card put them both out of the world cup and if he were to give two red cards he might as well abandon the match and award it to South Africa.

A couple from today's game in case you missed it:
Jake Polledri set another record for defenders beaten in a World Cup by a forward. What a tournament he is having: http://bit.ly/PolledriRecord2
And how about Callum Braley hunting down Cheslin Kolbe?! Not a bad effort: http://bit.ly/FasterThanKolbe

Wayne B went to the TMO...and can only go on what the 4th blind mouse gives an opinion on. They really have been a blight on the tournament with their inability to make a decision properly.

Worst tip tackle seen at RWC since Warburton in 2011. Definitely 2 reds for me but agree Barnes best there is by a long distance
