RWC19 "Stuff"

Sergio Parisse: "If New Zealand needed the points it wouldn’t have been cancelled.”
"It is ridiculous that there was no plan b, because it isn’t news that typhoons hit Japan."
I think he has a point. This world cup is becoming a farce, and whoever wins it will be in the knowledge that cancelled matches mean it wasn't a full tournament.
Re: RWC19 "Stuff"
Fat Taff . I take your point and have reflected long and hard on the one or two comments from others. Understanding racism is a journey that many of us have taken , others have yet to take and sadly some will probably never take. Far too often the negative messages are wrapped up in the that old faithful term - mere banter old chap. Banter between friends at one level is harmless eg Swansea and Cardiff footy fans and Spurs and Arsenal - although others may even here point to deeper more disturbing roots. In the early 1960’s as a young prospective university student on the interview round in England , on countless occasions I ran into the myth from interviewing panels ( in those days we were interviewed intensively) that ‘Taffy was a Welshman , Taffy was a thief.’ It came in various forms but the clear message was convince me that you are to be trusted. We see it on here where the Welsh Captain is whinging at the referee as opposed to the English Captain who is managing the referee well. The Welsh are cheating at the breakdown as opposed to the English who are testing the boundaries of the laws. ‘Othering’ or ‘labelling’ is a subtle form of racism where groups are denigrated through portrayal as different from us and somehow to be viewed with suspicion. I fully appreciate that this posting will be sidelined as the ramblings of an old snowflake by the few who should take the message to heart but it may just register with those who think and care about how we talk about other groups , of which we Welsh are but one of many. I do hope that the admins also take this message on board. Respect and tolerance is all we minority groups ask for.

It gives an extra week's rest in time for the quarter-final and allows for the possible recovery of injured players such as Billy Vunipola. However, for various reasons, England has not really been tested thus far. So, England may be undercooked for the quarter-final match be it against Australia or Wales.
Hmm. Yes. Undercooked. Hadn't really thought of that. Which would mean, in my Welsh dream-world, that Australia could go on to beat NZ in the semifinal - and then lose (again) to Wales in the Final.
Like!

Completely agree with Herefordpropforward . His post can be distilled to:

It appears that everyone can criticise England but same individuals get very touchy if you dare to diss their national team !!
I always admire the hwyl of Wales and no doubting they produce a lot of very capable players - especially in the backs. I don't like AWJ's constant whining to the referee, Biggar's histrionics or Welsh fans' ability to block out the truth though !!![]()
On basis that Gloucestershire and Wales border each other and have waged many wars/battles against each other I think Glos locals are allowed to retain some animosity towards the Bloody Taffs !!
I love this post

I agree with your sentiments about how undesirable this sort of "labelling" is. However, I'm not sure that the Welsh are singled out. Look at the number of times English players have been branded arrogant for behavior that wouldn't raise any comment if it came from any other team.
I do get irritated when Gloucester's opponents whinge at the ref and I do sometimes wish Gloucester players were better at managing the ref.
Re: RWC19 "Stuff"
This is a genuine question, how exactly does any of this abuse constitute 'racism'. Don't the 2 sides have to be a different race for this to apply ? It might not be very nice, possibly Xenophobic but explicitly racist?
Re: RWC19 "Stuff"
Alan-Wyn Jones does whinge at referees rather a lot and it is not racist to comment on this.
Neutral comment from an Englishman born in Bridgend, or does that mean I have a chip on both shoulders ![]()
Re: RWC19 "Stuff"
I feel sorry for the Japanese people and the 'Haruto Come Lately' rugby following, that have had a great tournament spoilt by the administrative and match officials.
Never mind World Rugby have ticked the box and can move on back to their cigars and brandies.
Re: RWC19 "Stuff"
It beggars belief that WRC could have allowed this situation to have occurred. Any sensible governing body would have allowed for slippage of this kind in typhoon season in Japan. Why couldn’t the games be played Monday or Tuesday well after the thing has passed as they do in any other proper sport?
